The Greeks gave names to the indigenous tribes living in the Black Sea Region according to their profession, place of residence or outstanding characteristics. Since the Gümüşhane region is famous for its mines, especially its carbonic iron, they named the region Khalybia (Khalyps: Greek iron + ia / ya: country-region suffix = Iron Land). The locals dealing with mining in the Eastern Black Sea region were also referred to as “Khalyb”.
