Gumushane, located in the eastern Black Sea region, Turkey is a province. It is neighbors with Bayburt in the east, Giresun in the west, Trabzon in the north and Erzincan in the south.

The name Argyropolis is the name given to the city later by those affected by the nationalist movement and means Gümüşhane in Greek. Greek: Αργυρούπολης: αργύρος argyros “silver” + πολης (police) city.
The name Khalybia is a name given to the Gümüşhane region in ancient times. The Greeks gave names to the indigenous tribes living in the Black Sea Region according to their profession, place of residence or outstanding characteristics. Since the Gümüşhane region is famous for its mines, especially its carbonic iron, they named the region Khalybia (Khalyps: Greek iron + ia / ya: country-region suffix = Iron Land). The locals dealing with mining in the Eastern Black Sea region were also referred to as “Khalyb”.
